Volgograd (the former Stalingrad); pop. 1 million, in southern Russia, some 900 south of Moscow EXPRESS TRAM (Skorostnoy Tramvay) In 1984, a 13.5 km long light rail line was inaugurated running north - south, parallel to the river Volga, in order to relieve a very crowded suburban rail line. The original line, called Skorostnoy Tramvay (Express Tram) included a 3.3 km long tunnel section which was built to metro standards with two underground stations with island platforms. With the southern underground extension opened in Dec. 2011, the line is now 17.1 km with 22 stations. Trams used are of the TATRA KT8D5 and TATRA T3 type common in Eastern Europe. 05-11-1984:
